Subject: The woman instantly stopped crying
Preheader: [learn The Basics of NVC]
Dear %user.name_f%,
Years ago, when I was working for a university, my dean and I were working with a Holocaust survivor who wanted to fund a Tolerance Endowment at our college.
Early in our relationship-building phase, I was working in my office when I heard my dean calling out my name. I came out of my office to find her speeding down the hallway in a frenzy.
She told me that the potential donor was having a "melt down" in her office and she didn't know what to do.
When I got there, the woman was crying and her husband was trying to "calm her down" by telling her not to make a big deal out of it.
The dean also started to try and "calm her down" by apologizing to her over and over.
If I hadn’t had some training in NVC, I would also have dived in trying to soothe this lady.
But having attended a couple of NVC courses, I stopped.
I took a deep breath — and in that pause I recalled what I had learned in my NVC courses.
I listened to her.
Then I said something like, "Are you deeply hurt that we have a display of the Berlin Wall but not of the suffering of the Jews in WWII, and you'd like more equal representation? Is that it?"
The woman instantly stopped crying, took a deep breath and I could see her whole body begin to relax.
"Yes, I want equal representation. Are you willing to do that?" she replied.
The dean and I both said yes, of course.
And, that was it.
With very little NVC training and in a very short moment, using rudimentary empathy skills, the "upset" was resolved in a way that all parties could feel good about.
Later, this generous woman made a significant donation to our college and with that funding we created a Center for Tolerance, whose focus is to diminish acts of genicide across the world.
This moment, more than any other that I can recall, demonstrated for me the sheer power of listening intently and empathy.
You see, %user.name_f%, it doesn't take much knowledge of NVC to be able to start putting it into practice.
