Subject: NVC + teens = harmony
Preheader: [Learn The Basics of NVC]
It's unusual to hear about teenagers and harmony in the same sentence, right %user.name_f%? 🤯💓🤗
You are probably expecting Mary… instead it's Robin O'Brien here …hello! 👋🏻
I'm a longtime Nonviolent Communication enthusiast, parent of 4, and Operations Director for NVC Academy.
Some of you will know me from live courses where I often handle the tech side of things and organize you all into breakout rooms 😉
I've popped into Mary's inbox (with her permission, of course) because recently she's sent you a couple of emails about her upcoming course, The Basics of Nonviolent Communication. And I want to share my own personal story about how transformative Nonviolent Communication can be.
Years back, I organized a trip across several states with a handful of teens so that my teen could participate in a martial arts event.
We were all excited to go.
As the trip got closer, my teen was offered the chance to attend a big-name concert with a few of their closest teen friends. 🎤
Suddenly the martial arts trip was not their priority — they wanted to back out of attending.
I felt frustrated, angry, and disappointed. I had spent so much time and energy making this event possible!
I told myself that my teen was ungrateful and unreliable.
I'm sure you can you imagine the tears, demands and anger that could have occurred in this situation, right %user.name_f%!
But wait – can you imagine the harmony that could occur instead?
Here's how it went.
I remembered some information from a recent course I had attended on the basics of Nonviolent Communication:
- Every strategy is an attempt to meet a need
- Behind every no, there is a yes
These two principles helped me connect with what might be going on for my teen. And created spaciousness for me to check in with them.
By attending the concert, they hoped to meet their needs for connection, fun, and belonging in a new friendship group.
And they also wanted to honor their commitment to attend the martial arts event.
They decided to go to the concert. To this day, they tell me it was one of the hardest decisions they ever made - both events and the people attending each mattered to them.
I wanted to provide opportunities for my teen and their peers while also allowing my teen to make their own choices.
I took the other teens to the martial arts event while my teen attended the concert with their friends.
Win-win. 🎉
Here's the thing -
you don't need years of NVC experience to transform your interactions with your kids.
Just a basic understanding can be enough to get you started.
It also works with partners, spouses, extended family, work colleagues, sales assistants, teachers, the receptionist at the Drs office. …You get the idea.
