Subject: I felt impatient

Dear %user.name_f%,
“But, what about…” the participant of my course continued.
I felt myself getting agitated.
We had already spent 10 minutes on their question.
Their question started on topic, but with each extra question they asked, we were moving further away from the focus of our session.
Now I was getting distracted, too.
And tense.
And a bit impatient.
I was wanting to support this individual AND move the group forward.
This was in my early days as a facilitator — before I knew how to handle this kind of situation.
With equitable facilitation, you attend to all the needs in the room.
Does that mean you try to meet all of them? No.
But you acknowledge them.
And address them when you can.
It does not mean giving everybody equal time.
But it ensures important things get expressed.
So that everyone leaves the room having had the opportunity to be heard.
Roxy Manning is hosting a new course, Equitable Facilitation: Supporting Equity through Leadership, starting on Wednesday September 13, 2023, 9am Pacific (California) Time.
In this 4-week course, Roxy will explore some of the essential components of facilitation, including:
- care for all of the people in the room
- adopt a ‘power-with’ approach
- identify who needs to be in the room
- ensure all voices are heard
- grow your capacity to name and address power dynamics
- increase your awareness of unconscious bias that impact group members’ experiences
Register by Wednesday August 23 to get 20% off — and NVC library members get an additional 20% off!
Plus everyone who joins the course will get lifetime access to the downloadable recordings.
I love this new course for anyone who finds themselves in a facilitator role, either intentionally, or unintentionally.
That might be those leading meetings at work, NVC group leaders, diversity and inclusion professionals, corporate leaders, parents or teachers.
You might be wondering what makes this course different from my own facilitation courses that I run every year.
My courses are designed to support individuals looking to facilitate NVC groups.
Roxy's course is different. It is designed for anyone that acts in a facilitating role who wishes to learn specifically how to facilitate with more equitability.
Roxy is an Afro-Caribbean immigrant to the USA. The wisdom she will share in this course comes from being on the receiving end of many non-equitable experiences through her life.
Would you like to help more people get heard, %user.name_f%?
