Relationships do not thrive when they are filled with frustration, misunderstandings, tension, and judgments.

And you likely know that jumping straight into solutions does not often go well.

The way we are socially conditioned to ‘listen’ often teaches us to correct, judge, try to be right and say the ‘right’ thing.

But the magic of empathy comes from listening deeper.

I was once doing a mediation with a couple who was separating. They had a small child of about six. It was a heated conversation and there was a lot of anger between them.

There was a critical moment when the husband stood up, leaned into his wife, and said, "You're not even a human being, I just can't stand you."

And he left the room.

I ran after him, heard what he had to say, and gave him a few words of empathy. Here’s a video where I describe what I actually said to him.

We went back in and continued the conversation, this time focusing on truly listening.  

Once they were able to hear and understand each other, they were able to find a beautiful unique solution that worked for both of them. Hear the full story here.

It's amazing how fast people can go from rage to calm and openness if we take a moment to hear them.

I call this the magic of empathy… and it’s exactly what I’ll be teaching in my upcoming course.
